Obituary

Thomas J. Flanagan, 83, of Barnet, Vermont, passed away peacefully at his home on July 7, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on May 2, 1943, in Paterson, New Jersey, Tom was the son of the late Hugh Flanagan and Margaret (St. Lawrence) Flanagan and his stepfather, Harold St. Lawrence. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Hugh Flanagan and William “Bill” Flanagan.

Tom was known for his unwavering work ethic, steady hands, and remarkable ability to fix just about anything. He dedicated more than four decades of his career to Wayne Ford in Wayne, New Jersey, where he proudly served as Parts & Service Director. His knowledge, integrity, and willingness to help others earned him the respect of coworkers and customers alike.

Fate intervened when Tom met the love of his life, Fran (Sarappo), on a blind date. That chance meeting blossomed into a beautiful marriage spanning 30 years. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure before making Vermont their home. They settled into the farmhouse Tom had long cherished through years of hunting trips and visits with his uncle in Mosquitoville, which always held a special place in his heart.

Tom found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved spending time with family and friends, listening to the music of The Eagles, Bob Seger, Fleetwood Mac, and Neil Young, and welcoming anyone willing to join him for an afternoon of porch sitting. He was happiest sharing his hobbies, including tractors, telling stories, lending a helping hand, or tackling a project that others thought couldn’t be fixed. Above all, Tom was a devoted man of faith and read his Bible everyday. Tom's commitment to his church was a guiding force throughout his life.

Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Frances “Fran” Flanagan; his children, Christopher and his wife Melissa of Pompton Lakes, NJ, Jackie and her partner Jacob of Danville, VT, and his cherished grandchildren, Chloe, Piper, and Ethan, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy. Tom will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering generosity, steadfast faith, and the countless lives he touched through his kindness and willingness to help others. His legacy lives on in the lessons he taught, the things he built and repaired, and the love he shared so freely with his family and friends.

In accordance with Tom’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. His family will honor and grieve his loss privately. Those wishing to honor Tom’s memory are invited to make a donation to Caledonia Home Health & Hospice or The Presbyterian Church of Barnet in recognition of the compassionate care and support they provided to Tom and his family.
