Obituary

Lisbon, NH- Vance David Douglas unexpectedly died on Sunday, April 10, 2022, at the age of 50.  Vance was born September 7, 1971, to David A. Douglas and Irene (Young) Breault in Woodsville, NH.  Vance spent some early years in Vermont before moving to live with his father in upstate NY.  Vance was a skilled carpenter and known for his strong work ethic.  Vance loved being outside.  He was an avid hunter and enjoyed gardening.  Vance's artistic skills began as a child drawing comics.  In adulthood he continued sketching as well as carving on things such as antlers.  Vance was known to those who knew him as charming, funny, a wise guy, loving, dependable, respectful, hardworking, and opinionated.  Vance was a family man, very proud of his four children (Emily, Conner, Kelsey, and Logan) and a devoted grandfather.  He met the love of his life, Brandy Helm, in upstate NY.  Together they raised their children Kelsey and Logan.  Vance was predeceased by his father, David Douglas in 2005.  Vance is survived by his mother Irene Breault and stepfather Joseph Breault; his sister Monica Douglas, her daughter Kristie Ricker, her daughter Anna Ricker, Anna's husband David Burroughs, III, their children Michael Scruton, Olivia Burroughs, Greysen Burroughs and Emmarie Burroughs; his sister Veronica Douglas and her sons Richard Saffo, III, Douglas Saffo and Arthur Saffo; his daughter Emily (Miller) Russell, her husband Conor Russell and their children Caden and Emilia; his son Conner Douglas; his daughter Kelsey Helm, her fiancé Wayne Beede and their two children Colton and Layne; and his son Logan Douglas.  In lieu of a funeral, the immediate family will gather for an intimate memorial.

Vance rests in peace after a very long battle with substance use.  He is one of the countless people impacted by addiction and the epidemic of drug use in this country.  Addiction devastates not only the person living with the compulsion, but their family and friends as well.  Drugs told Vance, "I will make you feel alright, I will make you feel worthy, I will make you feel loved, I will make you feel normal, and I will make you feel nothing."  The drugs failed to tell Vance that it would take his employment, take his car, take his home, take his motivation, tear his family apart and leave him broke."  Addiction is treatable.  There is hope for those facing this struggle as well as their families, with humanistic support and connection. Vance was so much more than his addiction and will be missed dearly by all those who knew him.
