Obituary

Newbury, VT Virgil M. Welch, 77, died on Sunday, April 5, 2009 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH, following a brief illness. He was born August 7, 1931 in Ryegate, VT, the son of the late Flossie (Rhodes) and Dick Welch. Virgil attended schools in Ryegate and Groton, VT and the Vermont Technical Center in Randolph. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and was then stationed in Germany following the war. He was honorably discharged in May 1960. He then worked at Caledonian Sand and Gravel and later became road foreman for the Town of Ryegate for many years, while still farming the Quarry Farm in South Ryegate, VT. He farmed that land with his wife and children for over forty years before selling it to live at his handmade log cabin on family land. He married his soul mate, Glenda (Burroughs) Welch, August 12, 1955 in South Ryegate. They celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary together in August of 2005. Together they had five children who all survive him: Cathrine Williams and husband Terry of South Ryegate and their children Kylea and Silas; Carolyn Kimball and husband Donnie of North Haverhill, NH and their children Meagan and Andrew; Dick Welch of South Ryegate and his three children Tyler, Chelsea and Corey; Duane Welch and wife Lorrie of Concord, VT and their children Brandon and Tonya; Alta Tegu and husband Steven of North Haverhill and their children Jennifer and Cassie and Jennifer s son and Papa s pride and joy, Jacob. He is also survived by a sister Linnie Rush of New York, a brother Kendall Welch of North Haverhill, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, a brother Wilbur Welch, his twin brother Vernon, and a sister Alta Rush. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed the smaller things in life, such as tending to his horses, spending time with his dog Blue , haying, sugaring, and having cookouts with his wife and family. At Virgil s request there will be no public services at this time. A gathering of family and friends will be held at a later date.
